Default :UPDATE w/PICS: Wiring for LED's under Dash

Hey guys, I just bought some 12" red LED strips from Auto Zone for $12 and I am putting them under the front dash to illuminate my floorboards. My goal is to have them light up when I turn my headlight switch over to running lights/low beams.

I found the How to with the dimmer/dome switch but I don't want them on with the dome at same time.

What wire do I splice into on the headlamp switch?

Thanks!

edit: Ok, with the help of Buggman and Clinton I was able to fix the issue and now have step by step pics for anyone wanting to accomplish the same thing!

Step1: Remove knee panel and metal panel from driver side

Step2: Locate wiring for Headlight switch. (next to fuse box)

Step3: Locate brown power cable (2001-2004) or Red/black (1995-2000) connecting to the main switch, not the dimmer!

Step4: Cut said wire and crimp on a wire connector. A: Wire to Switch. B: Brown wire to lights, and both + power cables from LED's

Step5: Take the 2 positive wires from the LED's and the Brown wire from the battery/lights and tape them together. Make sure you strip the wire far enough so you dont have the plastic pieces jamming up in the connector.

Step6: Run your 2 negative wires into a grounding connector and attach to any metal piece in truck. (I used a circle end connector and put both wires in it then put a screw right in the middle so it wouldn't fall out)

Step7: Test it before putting everything back into place!

Step8: Put everything back together and enjoy your new lights!

Check behind the radio bezel for the 4x4 or fog switch wiring. You should have a red/black wire at one of those locations (or even at the headlight switch or behind the gauge cluster... some years will use alternate color wires, I'm sure someone will chime in).
That red/black wire will be the dash illumination + power wire, it will give 12v when the parking lights or headlights are on (or whenever your gauge/switches are lit up).
Connect your + led wires here & find a good ground & you're in business.

Ok so i did a little more searching and noticed someone posted the same question about 4 months back on the How-To's in the electrical threads. Yaa me for not doing a quick search.

Anyways, I did as buggman said and found the wire to my light switch but since I have a 2002, it was brown and not black/red. Thanks to Clinton and his sticky on wiring diagrams.

After some cutting, splicing, and 30min later, it's finished. Looks great and does exactly what i was wanting it to do. Step by step pics coming as soon as i upload them!!

Well the great thing is I have plenty of wire just stuffed under the dash so I can put a toggle switch in-between the light switch and the LED's later if I wanted to. I may do that later on but Ive already moved onto another project lol

I did the same exact thing but in blue, also added some in my vents, in the back, and the lil cubbyhole thing by the pass airbag switch, I ran mine to a cigarette lighter plus tho and just plug it in when I want lights and leave it unplugged if I want no light lol, looks good and good write up man

Hey nice directions and pics. The only bad thing is some how (and i followed the directions exactly) i hooked up the lights to the positive to the lights now when everything else is off they still run and have to be shut off by hand. Is this the way you have it because if so do you have a switch hooked up.

Thats awesome. Do you think it would be possible to run the power for lights like this, off of the wires that go to power the lights to illuminate the temperature controls?
